Since Phyllis recovered from a coma, Jack has tried to tell Phyllis again and again that he had fallen in love with Kelly.  But he doesn't want Phyllis to be upset so he has never told her yet until now...

I have my moments, self pity, loneliness... waiting for you week after week, month on end, calling that clinic and waiting for a sign that you'd come around, that things will be back to normal again. It never happened and so I shutdown a little, a lot. And then things changed. Everything changed.
